Let Us Not Judge

A 24 year old man was looking outside the train window.

He shouted: Dad, look the trees are going backwards.

The father smiled at him.

A young couple sitting nearby were intrigued by the 24 year old’s childish behaviour.

He again exclaimed: Dad! Look. The clouds are running with us!

Unable to resist, the couple said to the father: Why don’t you take your son to a doctor?

The old father smiled and said: I did. We are returning from the hospital. My son was born blind; he just got his eyes today.



Every person has a story.

And we deal with people all the time.

Let us not judge them before we truly know them.

The truth might shock or amaze us.

Stop To Email

Emailing allows us to get work done quickly with people across cities, across buildings, across work-stations (J), across geographies.

However, without the emotional signs and social cues of face-to-face or phone interaction, it’s more possible to be misunderstood.

Also, mindless emailing overstuffs everyone’s inboxes.

Let us try Mindful Emailing. With a few mails during the week. Or all of them.


  1. COMPOSE an email.
  2. STOP to take one long deep breath. Pay attention to the breath. (count of 5 on the inhale and 5 on the exhale, if you like)
  3. THINK of the person to whom the email is going and how you want them to receive your message.
    1. Could they misunderstand your words and become angry or offended?
    2. Are you being more positive than you intend?
  4. LOOK at the draft email again.
  5. OBSERVE how you are.
  6. CHANGE it if appropriate.
  7. PROCEED – send your email

The Harmony of Life

In music, harmony creates a deeper, blended sound.

In art, harmoniously interacting colors are visually pleasing.

In life, relating to others with compassion and love allows us to align with more beauty and grace.

Harmony is the state that results from ‘making friends’ with realistic people and situations.

It helps us find ‘goodness’ in every person and situation.

In a study called ‘Project Aristotle’, Google wanted to know the secret to building a productive team.

Their data-driven approach concluded that the best teams:

  • respect one another’s emotions; and
  • are mindful of one other.

It has less to do with who is in a team; rather it is about how the team interacts with one another.

At the heart of Google’s strategy is the concept of ‘psychological safety’ a model of team work in which ‘members have a shared belief that it is safe to take risks and share a range of ideas without the fear of being humiliated’.

In 1989, Stephen Covey said the same thing in The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People: members of productive teams take the effort to understand each other, find a way to relate to each other, and then try to make themselves understood.

Harvard professor Amy Edmondson in her study concluded that psychological safety boosted performance in teams.

Google now describes psychological safety as the most important factor to building a successful team.

In short, just be nice.

IKIGAI – The Reason for Being

Ikigai (生き甲斐) is a Japanese concept that means “a reason for being”.

The term ikigai is composed of two Japanese words: iki (生き?), referring to life, and kai (甲斐?), which roughly means “the realisation of what one expects and hopes for”.

  • It lies at the centre of the interconnecting circles of Passion, Mission, Profession and Vocation.
  • It refers to mental and spiritual circumstances under which we believe our lives are valuable.
  • It is the process of allowing the self’s possibilities to blossom.
  • It is not necessarily linked to one’s economic status or the present state of society.
  • Behaviours that make us feel ikigai are natural & spontaneous actions – not actions which we are forced to take


According to the Japanese, everyone has an ikigai. It requires introspection as it is believed that the discovery of one’s ikigai brings satisfaction and meaning to life.

What is our ikigai?

  • What are the things that makes our lives worthwhile?
  • What is our life’s potential?
  • What is the reason for music in the soul?
  • What is the reason for that spring in our step?
  • What is our reason to smile?
  • What is our reason to enjoy life?
  • What is our reason to get up each morning and do the things that we do?
  • What is our deep sense of purpose?

Have we found our ikigai?

  • Are we doing something that we love?
  • That the world needs?
  • That we are good at?
  • That we can be paid for?

In a TED Talk, Dan Buettner referenced ikigai as one of the reasons for long and happy lives.

How can we live with a sense of purpose, for PURPOSE is the platform on which all other decisions are made?

The secret to a happy life is not to live in the hope of a great life tomorrow.

It is to live with intention today.

Restoring A City

Ordinary people are capable of doing extraordinary things.

We saw this happening at Chennai where countless men and women – young and old got down to restoring the city.

Our very own Happiest Minds – Venkatesh Kolli, Sapna Yadav, Palaniappan Kumaraswamy, Ayyappan Rathinaswamy, Saravanakumar Govindarajan and Veera Raghavan Rajasekaran went to Chennai to partner with World Vision (https://www.worldvision.in/) in this restoration mission.


…sorted & packed relief materials

…loaded them onto trucks.

…travelled in the trucks

…unloaded relief materials.

…distributed the relief materials

Touching nearly 200 lives.

All of them had one thing to say, that serving the needs of the people was a defining experience in their lives.

Mindfulness @ Work


We have an open-office policy at work.

While this  conveys collaboration and transparency, they are difficult on ears and concentration.




…Corridor Discussions.

…Ringing phones.

…Speaker phone conversations

…Voices in the cubicles.

…Sounds generated by co-workers.

There is no getting away from these sounds and other ‘white noise’ that constantly and consistently intrude into one’s flow of thought.

There are ways we can create sound buffers – listen to music or use apps that help obscure distracting sounds.

The best thing however that we can all do: let us remember that we, too, generate sounds that intrude on our fellow team mates.

Let us keep our voice down, our music low and “make noise unto others as we would have them make noise unto us”
